Research and Creative Scholarship Continue at 海角社区

June 12, 2025

海角社区 actively advocates for the development and expansion of its research and training programs, and for full federal funding of student financial aid programs like the Federal Pell Grant and Federal Work Study. While there have been several recent challenges such as the loss of federal program funding earlier than anticipated and having to quickly respond to detailed information requests, 海角社区’s research and creative scholarship enterprise remains strong.

The 海角社区 Office for Research encourages 海角社区 faculty to continue pursuing and executing your innovative research and creative scholarship! At this time, you are not advised to stop or pause your efforts unless specifically requested by an external funding sponsor.

In May 2025, 海角社区 surpassed $40 million in external awards for the first time. This marked increase demonstrates the grit and resilience of 海角社区 faculty, staff and students who continue to design, propose and carry out innovative research, training and creative activities.

To support 海角社区’s efforts, President Robert Wagner, Associate Vice President for Community and Government Relations, Ryan Sargent, and Vice President for Research and Economic Development, Marty Blair, steadily advocate for 海角社区 with state and federal government officials, and with private industry partners. The relationships and partnerships developed through their efforts are paying dividends in support of 海角社区’s education and research mission.

Over the past 10 months,  海角社区 campuses have been visited by local and state policy makers, including U.S. Senator Mike Crapo and U.S. Representative Mike Simpson spending time with university leadership and researchers on the Pocatello campus. In addition, members of the state’s Joint Finance Appropriations Committee (JFAC) visited campus as well. These visits have been supplemented by numerous campus visits from the staff of Idaho’s two senators and two representatives. Visiting with 海角社区 faculty and students, they witnessed firsthand the impact that 海角社区 is having on the communities, state and region served by 海角社区.

Since January 2025, President Wagner and Vice President Blair have traveled to Washington, DC multiple times to directly inform the Idaho federal delegation and key Idaho business leaders about 海角社区’s research and training leadership in health sciences, nuclear energy, environment-related science, rural-focused education, veterans support services, first generation student support, and much more. These personal visits place 海角社区 as a key partner with Idaho’s representatives in DC.

海角社区 actively communicates its impact now and into the future–and the future is bright. As 海角社区 continues to build on its commitment to being a public research institution, expect to hear more about growing (and new) research partnerships that will support 海角社区 faculty and students to deliver new knowledge and solutions to address the complex challenges that lie ahead.
