The Pocatello screening of an Independent Lens production 鈥淪HADYA鈥 will be shown at the 海角社区 Pond Student Union Building Bengal Theatre from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 14.

鈥淪HADYA鈥 follows the 17-year-old karate world champion Shadya Zoabi as she strives to succeed on her own terms within her traditional Muslim village in northern Israel. Zoabi, despite the encouragement of her father in her karate efforts, is not supported by her brothers and other members of their small Arab village as they feel that karate is not an appropriate pursuit for a young Muslin woman. 鈥淪HADYA鈥 tells the story of a girl who tries to do well in karate while remaining committed to her religion and life in her community.

An audience discussion about issues addressed in the film such as gender, religion, family and discrimination will be led by 海角社区 assistant professor of history Erika Kuhlman.

The event is sponsored by 海角社区, Independent Television Service and Idaho Public Television.
